Music Genres

1 Chronicles 13:8 “And David and all Israel were rejoicing before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.”

A while back my band played at a small church with very few youth.  After our show we had an older gentlemen tell us we were wrong for playing that style of music because it wasn’t Christian like.  My dad respectfully asked the gentleman how he had gathered that information.  He of course didn’t have a good answer for that other than he just didn’t’ agree with the style of music.  There is nowhere in the bible that says a certain genre of music is wrong to praise God with.  We as humans have made genres for music.  If God has given you a song it doesn’t matter if it’s rock or country, it’s God’s and you need to put your heart into performing that for Him.  Be respectful of other people’s opinions.  If they feel that makes them stumble to listen to a certain style of music, by all means don’t make them feel like they have compromised.  We all worship in our own way and to tell someone the way they worship God is wrong is an attempt to do God’s job.  David danced before the Lord in worship in his undies, rock music is no more undignified than that.  If you worship God by softly singing a hymn or if you worship God by screaming to the skies, He accepts both as wonderful, heartfelt praises as long as you’re doing it with a pure heart.

Psalm 27:6 “Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.”
