Extreme Hoarding

Hebrews 12:28-29 “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

My mom and I love watching the show Hoarders.  It’s sad and intriguing to figure out why the people do what they do and how it got to such an extreme point.  My favorite one involves a man whose wife died.  He mentally took a nose dive.  He was very lonely so he went and got two rats from the pet store.  They became his best friends and he pampered them as he would children.  His infatuation grew, which led him to buy more rats.  He started letting them roam free in his house and they began mating.  Before long, the entire house was overrun by about 2,000 rats.  He loved all of them but couldn’t give them the proper care they needed.  He couldn’t even sleep in his bed or on his couch; he had to hide in the garage.  Slowly, the specialists were able to work with the man so that, mentally, he could grasp it wasn’t right and he needed to let them clear out the rats.  Through many tears and pain, he let them do their job.  By the end of the show he was more stable and slowly making his way out of the mental/emotional wreck he allowed himself to plummet into.  Before Christ, we had no hope to hold onto.  We relied on what the world could offer to make us happy.  In the end, it was all laced with tears and pain.  We will never be satisfied until God is our infatuation.  We can get as many animals, shoes, tools, investments, friends, and accomplishments as we want but we will never feel satisfied or at peace until God is what we hoard in our heart.  Get this, it’s impossible not to know that someone hoards something because it consumes them, right?  It's impossible for them to hide-it becomes them.  We need to long after God so much that it’s impossible for those around us not to see Him consuming who we are.  Hoarders let what they have a passion for become their life.  We need to become extreme hoarders of God-we need to let Him become our life.
Galatians 5:24 “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
