Watching and Learning

1 John 4:1 “My dear friends, don’t believe everything you hear.  Carefully weigh and examine what people tell you.  Not everyone who talks about God comes from God.  There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world.”

My niece is a year old.  She learns new things all the time.  She has gotten into this habit lately where she will watch what you do and try to mimic it.  This morning I yawned and she gave me a fake yawn back.  The incident that gave us the biggest laugh happened just recently.  She loves to play in her room but will sometimes empty her dresser drawers.  When she was younger we would always stick her shirts or shorts on her head.  She loved it.  Well, as she got older she decided that she would just start doing it herself.  One day she was playing in her room and we peeked down the hallway to see her playing with a pair of shorts stuck on her head.  Isn’t it funny what children will pick up and never forget?  We all have learned behavior that we’ve picked up from the bigger influences in our life.  Sometimes this leads into us believing a certain way just because we have learned to believe it that way.  Don’t just take what you’ve learned from someone else and run off with it stuck in your heart.  Take it and study it to see if it’s truly what you believe and figure out why you believe it that way instead of just taking someone’s word for it.  My niece decided she liked the shorts on her head when we did it so she tried it out herself to realize she really did like it.  God wants to show us the reason why He laid beliefs on our hearts so that we will have a personal and deep reason to hold to those beliefs.

Proverbs 10:13 “Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.”
