Baby Steps

1 Corinthians 13:11 “When I was an infant at my mother's breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good.”

I have a little niece who is a year old.  She’s learning to walk but just can’t seem to get past the crawling stage.  If she’s not paying attention she will stand on her own and even take a few steps but as soon as she realizes what she’s doing she will slowly sink down to a squat and then slowly sink to her knees so that she’s in the crawling position.  Once there, she’s much happier and satisfied.  She refuses to walk because it’s new and scary.  As Christians we often find ourselves in this position.  God asks us to grow in our faith and take the next step but it’s new and scary.  We struggle with moving on because we’re uncomfortable with the new circumstances.  When we’re not focusing on it God is helping us grow in it without us even knowing it.  One day my niece will start walking and realize what she’s doing but won’t sink down to what she’s always used to.  She will see that it’s really not hard and scary after all and start walking more and more.  The same is true for us, one day we will realize it’s not as hard and scary as we had always perceived it to be.  We won’t sink back down to what we’ve always been used to.  God will raise us up to the next level in understanding with Him.

1 Peter 2:2 “Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God's pure kindness. Then you'll grow up mature and whole in God.”
